It’s a problem that plagues most homes in Australia – a garage full of clutter that you barely have enough room for your car. There are tons of ways online to organise your garage, so we’ve filtered those for you and narrowed the list down to our three favourite steps:
Successful organisation requires planning. First, take a look at your garage and take stock of all the items stored in it. Aside from the car, consider the items that are taking up too much space. Is it your kid’s bike and old toys? Old clothes? Gardening stuff? Are the items mostly big or small? Once that’s done, you’ll then be able to decide what type of storage to use. Will racks suffice, or do you need cabinetry? Can you use the walls and the ceiling for your storage solutions? By putting your thoughts on paper, you can then visualise how your clean, organised, and clutter-free your garage will look.
This is the part where it gets ugly. De-cluttering means removing everything from it’s current location and putting them on the floor for sorting. It’s important that you go through each and every item so you can distinguish which of these to keep and which of these to toss out or give away. When sorting the items, anything that’s rusty or broken with no chance of being repaired or re-purposed, or anything that poses a health hazard, such as rusty nails and old fertilisers, should be disposed of.
Storage space doesn’t necessarily mean floor space. You can use your walls and ceilings too. By putting wall racks, pegs, or shelves, you will have a place for all the garden tools, cords and other items that used to be on the floor. For larger items such as ladders, bicycles, or surfboards, just put some hooks on the ceiling for easy suspension. Small items such as nails and screws can be put in clear bottles or mason jars and then stored away on a shelf. Anything in between should be kept in labelled boxes that you can neatly arrange in a row. A rule of thumb would be to put frequently used items within easy reach.
