While you can easily fix a dripping tap or maintain your sink, other plumbing tasks should only be carried out by licensed professionals. That’s why you’ll definitely be enlisting the help of a plumber sooner or later. To make sure that you won’t be duped into hiring a dodgy plumber, follow these important steps:

1. Collect quotes

One mistake you can commit when looking for a tradesman is hiring the first one to send a quote. It’s best to wait for other estimates so you can compare their prices and see which has the best deal for your money. Just make sure to be specific with your task description so only those who specialise in your job will send you their quotes.

2. Check qualifications

Never forget to check the credentials of your prospective plumbers. Aside from having enough experience in handling the work that you need done, they should also have the proper license. Check if it’s valid and up to date and if it authorises them to carry out your plumbing jobs. If your work is gas appliance installation, they should have a separate gas fitting licence.

3. See if they’re insured

It’s best to go for a plumber who’s fully insured. Insurance not only protects them but also you and your property in case accidents happen; make sure to ask about the details and coverage of their insurance.

4. Read feedback

One of the best ways to check if your prospective plumber is reliable is to refer to their customers’ feedback. By reading what they say about the tradie’s work quality and ethics, you’ll know:

  • whether they’re polite or rude
  • whether they’re professional or inefficient
  • whether they’re punctual or tardy
  • whether they give reasonable or exorbitant rates, and more.

5. Set it down in black and white

Don’t start any job without both of you signing a written contract. It should contain all the necessary information such as:

  • important dates, the plumber’s ABN, licence number, and other business details and contact details
  • job guarantee or warranty
  • price
  • specifics of the job

Never settle for only a quote; have a contract that you can keep.

6. Ask for a compliance certificate

They should be able to give you a compliance certificate upon job completion. Ask them if they issue compliance certificates before starting any work.
