People are booking photographers to go into the delivery room with them to capture the moment of birth!
Although I’m yet to have any children, I think this is a total invasion of privacy – and just a little insane!
This article interviews a photographer in the US who was paid $1,000 to photograph the arrival of baby Christopher via scheduled C-section.
This is about the same amount the average ServiceSeeking.com.au photographer charges for a basic wedding package!
I suppose when you think about it, the process is pretty similar:
- A pre-D-day meet-up is necessary to establish a connection and chat about expectations. What sort of pics do you want? Do you prefer tastefully staged shots or a natural look? (although I think the latter is not usually an option!)
- Shots prior to the event. In this case, the photographer actually got to the hospital before the “client” started prepping for the shoot!
- During the event, it’s the photographer's job to blend into the background while not missing a moment of the action. In this situation, it would also be appropriate for them to offer words of encouragement!
At the end of the day, though, it is pretty crazy. Sure, the photographer gets to partake in a joyous occasion, but they’re still essentially a stranger! Plus, do they have to be on call 24/7? I’d want more than $1,000 for that! It’s not like they can schedule a natural delivery birth shoot in between two-weekend weddings! Would you ever consider birth photography? Do you know someone who’s done it?!
