Choosing a finish for your floors

If you want something hard-wearing, then a polyurethane product is right for you.

Something a bit easier for everyday living is Tung Oil, which is a breeze to maintain and minimises some complaints like edge bonding or stretch marks that happen with other finishes.

Gloss level is also important as you must remember the shinier the coating, the more it will show dust and scratches, especially with darker flooring.

For a more environmentally friendly approach, use a water-based polyurethane that has less odour and dries faster – but looks subtly different to an oil-based polyurethane.

Dust is also a critical factor in achieving a fantastic end result, as much ambient dust should be removed from the atmosphere prior to coating to prevent that “sandpaper” effect from spoiling the finished product.

Also, make sure that as much of the surrounding area is sealed off to avoid excess airflow. Stick to products that your flooring professional knows and trusts.

Most timber flooring companies have been doing this for years and can usually provide you with a product that will suit all your needs.

Price is also important! Most materials are of similar cost, so the only area to save on is labour. A cheap job is often a quick, rushed job and will likely need to be redone to achieve what you are looking for. Paying a bit extra allows the sanders to spend the time on your project that it deserves.
