Dishwashers: How to choose the right one
Wondering how to choose the right dishwasher? Here are some of the basics that you need to know:
Who will do the dishes? It’s a question that’s bound to cause some finger-pointing. Dishwashing is one of the least liked chores in the home. It's a good thing the dishwasher is here to your rescue. Not only does it save you from arguments, but you get to save water by using it, too.
Wondering how to choose the right dishwasher? Here are some of the basics that you need to know:
Types and sizes
Compact: This space-saving dishwasher can be loaded on a benchtop and connected to your kitchen tap. If you’re a renter, a compact dishwasher is your best option, as it doesn’t require installation.
Standard: Probably the most common type, a standard (60x60x86) dishwasher can easily fit into the allotted dishwasher space in most homes.
Large: If you have a large household, then this dishwasher is for you. However, because of their size and added features, these dishwashers tend to cost more than the standard ones.
Portable: This handy appliance comes on wheels, so it can easily be moved into storage when not in use. Since they’re not permanently connected to a plumbing source, they can be a good option for renters as well.
Features:
Noise reduction: Cheaper dishwashers are noisier than the more expensive ones. If you have an open-plan kitchen and you don’t want to be bothered by the noise, you might want to go for a high-end machine.
Racks and holders: Choose a dishwasher with highly adjustable racks and holders. This will give you the freedom to adjust the interior according to your needs.
Wash cycles: Aside from the light, medium, and heavy cycles, look for a dishwasher that has programs such as half load, eco wash, sanitising, and steam-clean cycles.
Filters: If you don’t want to clean the filter by hand, opt for a dishwasher that has a self-cleaning filter instead.
Energy rating: Look for a dishwasher that has an energy rating of at least 3.5. It will save you at least 30% off the usual running costs.
Water efficiency: Check the WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) rating. The higher the number, the more water-efficient it is.
User-friendly: You might also want to check the control panel. All those fancy programs will be for naught if you don’t know how to get them to work.
Aside from the type, style and features, dishwashers can be built-in, benchtop, or freestanding. They can also be fully integrated or semi-integrated, depending on your preference. For colours, most dishwashers come in black, white, or stainless steel. The fancier versions even come in purple!
