A gazebo is a roofed structure that offers an open view of the surrounding area. Gazebos can be free-standing, or they can be attached to a garden wall. They are normally found in gardens, parks, and other public areas. Gazebos, just like patios, are usually added as ornamental features to gardens; they also serve as areas where you can relax or entertain guests.

Gazebos can be made from different types of materials such as timber or wood, plastic, vinyl, or metal. Proper care and maintenance is needed if you want your gazebo to maintain its appearance and to last for many years to come.

Here are some simple ways on how to care for your gazebo:

  1. Cleaning the gazebo – Hose it down with water to wash away debris and dirt. If you want more thorough cleaning, wash it down with warm, soapy water and use a soft brush to get rid of any remaining dirt. Check the gazebo for mildew, stains, and rust. If you find any, make sure to remove it completely to prevent rust and mildew from spreading. Don’t forget to rinse the pergola thoroughly. Lastly, remove leaves and twigs that fall on the gazebo’s roof every two months. Never stand on the roof, though. Use a ladder and a broom to reach and remove the debris.
  2. Check for repairs – If you see some parts of the gazebo that need some repair work, make sure to touch up the damage immediately. If there are stains forming due to the fasteners, it is best to replace them immediately. Repairing damaged parts is important to maintain the uniformity and appearance of the gazebo.
  3. Regularly inspect the gazebo for insect nests and webs especially during the spring and summer months.
  4. Apply paint and waterproof sealant every two to four years to protect natural wood gazebos. Waterproof sealants make the wood strong and keep it from deteriorating. It is also important to keep the wooden gazebos dry. If there are bushes and shrubs nearby, trim it regularly to keep the air flowing.
