Finally, a garden that your dog won’t be able to dig up! A vertical garden is perfect if you don’t have a lot of space, want to cover a bare wall, or are looking for something offbeat. But what exactly is vertical gardening? How do you plan and create one that fits your needs?

A vertical garden is defined as a wall that is covered by plants and/or vegetation. It is a planting technique designed to let the plants grow and extend upward instead of along a horizontal surface like a traditional garden.

There are a lot of materials that you can use to encourage the plants’ upward growth, from trellises to poles, arbours to stakes, and so on. Some even use re-purposed soda bottles, old cans, gutters, and other unconventional materials as planters.

As with any other type of gardening, vertical gardens require sunlight, water, and rich, fertile soil. Typical gardening equipment, such as trowels, watering cans, gardening gloves, etc., are also needed.

For the more sophisticated gardener, a custom-built frame containing tubes and pockets for the plants can be attached to the wall. Watering the plants is a breeze through a drip irrigation system.

It’s easy to see why vertical gardening is gaining popularity among renters or apartment dwellers. For those people who love gardening, they will no longer be hampered by the lack of space. All you need is a blank wall and a love for all things green, and you’re good to go. Not only that, there are a lot of perks that come with having a vertical garden.

We’ve compiled a list of the advantages below:
