1. Storage
It sounds simple, but you need to make sure there’s a place for everything in your kitchen cabinets. Ensure there are dedicated places for:

  • Pots, pans, trays, bowls, plates, cups and saucers etc.
  • Fresh foods
  • Dry foods and packaged goods
  • Appliances
  • Cookbooks and artifacts
  • And often these days – a computer terminal!

2. Work/bench space
Ensure the kitchen cabinets don’t impose on bench space. There should still be plenty of clear, open spaces to work and serve on – as many as space constraints allow. Ideally, they should be adjacent to the main work areas, i.e. the sink, cooktop and oven.

3. Functionalist
Think about where the cabinets are positioned. You should minimise the distances you have to move around, so kitchen elements should be arranged in logical sequences from preparation through to serving.

It’s also important not to overlook waste management, cleaning utensils and equipment and energy and water conservation issues.

4. Aesthetics
The kitchen is one of the main defining features of the modern living environment, so it’s important that it looks great. When selecting/installing cabinetry, you need to consider finish, colour and texture.

These days, kitchen cabinetry is also often integrated into the main family and/or living areas of the house. To achieve an ultra-desirable cohesive look, you should consider using the same materials throughout.
