Colour is a very important aspect of interior design. It can dramatically change the look and feel of a room. This is the reason why painting the walls is one of the most popular ways to make a house over.

When choosing a colour for your home interior, don’t restrict your options to those with white and beige undertones. You can add personality and really liven up your house by choosing the right colour scheme. The first step is to decide on the look that you want for your house. Do you want your home to be a place of relaxation, or do you want a house that makes a statement through bold, dramatic colours?

If you want a soft, soothing atmosphere, stick to monochromatic hues such as whites, creams, greys, and soft pastel hues. These colours make you feel calm and relaxed.

If you’re going for elegant and sophisticated, neutral shades are the best options for you. However, neutral doesn’t mean you should be limited to white and beige; you can also go with ivory, taupe, black, and grey.

Pick rich, vibrant colours such as orange, purple, and green if you want your house to come alive.

Now that you know the look you’re aiming for, it’s time to choose the actual colours. The different shades and hues available are endless. To make choosing easier, it’s always a good idea to refer to the colour wheel.

Next, you need to create a colour scheme. Here are the four different types of colour schemes:

  1. Monochromatic – This means you will use different tints, tones, and shades of a single hue.
  2. Analogous – This type of colour scheme uses groups of three colours that are next to each other in the colour wheel. An example of this is red-orange, orange, and yellow-orange.
  3. Contrast – This triadic colour scheme uses colours that are evenly spaced out around the colour wheel. For this to work, let one colour dominate and use the other two colours for accent.
  4. Complementary – This type of colour scheme uses colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel. An example of this is red and green.

Colour in interior design does not only refer to the colour of your walls and ceilings. It also includes furniture, curtains, rugs, and all the other things that can be found inside your house. Once you’ve decided on a colour and colour scheme, pick your furniture first before painting your walls and ceilings. Getting paint from a home improvement store is easy, but finding furniture, rugs, and home decor that will match your colour scheme can be tricky.

These are just a few general guidelines when deciding on what colours to choose for your home. Although interior decorating can be a good project for you, it’s also very time-consuming. If you need help, you can check out our top interior designers here.
