If you’re planning a construction project, knowing the qualifications that a builder should have is crucial. Often, the success of your project largely relies on your builder’s qualifications.

Importance of a builder’s licence

There are three main reasons that explain why it’s important to hire a licensed builder, especially if your building project is a major one.

  • The law permits only licensed builders to carry out different building projects including renovations and home extensions.
  • The builder’s licence proves that the builder is fully qualified to build a structure that meets building regulations and standards.
  • Insurance cover for building jobs is a legal requirement for builders.

The issuance of trade licences is still controlled by government licensing services from each Australian state or territory. Although requirements for builder or tradie licences vary per state, they also share some of these in common such as:

  • All builders operating within Australia must show proof of experience and/or education. This can be through an apprenticeship combined with selected TAFE courses or through an accredited university degree program.
  • There are different types of licences and certificates based on the builder or tradie’s speciality.
  • Proof of insurance is mandatory.
  • Builders and other tradies are required to renew their licences periodically.

State licences limit builders to working in a specific place, but after the introduction of the National Trade Licensing Authority (NOLA) in 2008, getting a national trade licence can soon be possible. NOLA is expected to be implemented in 2014.

Qualifications your specific builder needs

The process of selecting a specific builder mainly involves getting quotes and comparing them, but price is not the only thing to consider. A valid licence is already on top of your builder requirements, but knowing more about a specific builder is also necessary. What else should you look for in a builder? Here are a few more things that your builder should offer:

  • References on past jobs
  • Examples of work done previously
  • A detailed quote that answers all questions regarding project costs and estimated time of completion
  • Proof of insurance that includes your eligibility to receive Builders Warranty Insurance on your building project

Now that you know the basics of choosing a quality builder, choosing the best quote for your project is easier. Get some quotes from expert builders and get started on your building or renovation project immediately.
