The different types of gutters

There are many types of gutters. It’s important to know the facts about each type so you know which will best fit your home. Whether you’re looking to replace your old gutters or trying to find the best one for your new home, this guide will help you decide.

Round gutters

A round or half-round gutter is a half-circle, with the open half facing the roof. Since they have a wide diameter, this type of gutter is very capable of dealing with a lot of rainwater. However, it is also very susceptible to debris and levelling issues. Lastly, because they don’t have a flat back, you can’t use hidden gutter hangers.

Fascia gutters

Fascia or eaves gutters are commonly used on houses where fascia boards have not been installed over the rafter tails. Since it’s a combination of gutter and fascia, it can be directly installed on the roof’s rafters without the need for traditional timber or metal fascia. Fascia gutters come in a wide range of colours, finish and profile. The material is usually made from Colorbond or Zincalume. If you have a colonial house, then this gutter will complement it nicely.

Box gutters

Box, parallel, or trough gutters are usually rectangular in shape and are placed between two parallel surfaces. If you have a roof that is close to a wall, this would be the ideal gutter for your house. Keep in mind, though, that with box gutters, water overflow will go directly to your house since it has nowhere else to go.  That’s why it’s important that your box gutter is cleaned at least once a month and is deep and wide enough for easy cleaning.

Quad gutters

Also known as “D” gutters, this type of gutter is one of the most popular choices for both replacements and installation. The biggest advantage of quad gutters is that it’s style complements most Australian homes. Made from stainless or galvanised steel, Colorbond or Zincalume – you have the option to choose which one will fit your needs and budget.

Once you’ve made your choice, you might want to look into getting a gutter guard as well. Since they screen your gutters from debris, gutter guards will reduce the number of times that you have to clean your gutters. There are different types of gutter guards to choose from, including mesh, nylon, bottle and foam. While getting a gutter guard doesn’t mean that you can stop cleaning your gutters altogether, it does mean that you won’t have to haul up your ladder every week or so just to clear your gutters of fallen leaves, twigs and other debris.
