The dos and don’ts of lawn watering
Is daily lawn watering necessary? And with all the watering restrictions about, is it even allowed? Here are the basic dos and don'ts of lawn watering:
Wondering when and how to water your lawn? The right watering techniques will keep your lawn healthy and green for a long time. Read on to find out the do’s and don’ts of lawn watering.
Lawns are probably counted among the biggest consumers of water in a household. Since people are afraid of starving their beloved turf, they tend to drench them with water day in and day out. But is daily watering really necessary? And with all the watering restrictions about, is it even allowed?
DON’T water every day
Your lawn doesn’t need that much water. In fact, too much watering can lead to fungus problems as well as a shallow root system. Most experts recommend that you give a thorough soaking once or twice a week. One advantage of this is that your lawn experiences mild drought distress, causing the grass to send its roots deeper into the ground to look for a water source. This makes your lawn stronger and tougher come summer.
DO water your lawn early
Early morning is the best time of the day to water your lawn. Why? The pressure of the water is at its peak. Also, since there’s no sun, the water will have a chance to soak down into the ground before evaporating. If you’re not an early riser, set your water sprinkler’s timer and let it do the work for you.
DON’T water in the afternoon and night
Watering your lawn in the mid-afternoon is not the most efficient way. Not if you’re looking to save some water. When you water your lawn in the mid-afternoon, a lot of the water will evaporate before it has a chance to soak down. While watering in the evening will give the lawn a good soaking, the water will remain in the ground for too long, which can trigger fungus and other lawn diseases.
DO set up an irrigation system.
An irrigation system saves you a lot of time, effort and money. From drip irrigations to sprinklers, take time to determine which system would be the best option for you and your lawn.
