The secret to amazing wedding hair and make-up

The number one piece of advice that I have for any bride is not to just go for the best price when choosing someone for hair and make-up but to go for someone that you trust. You should make sure that they understand your needs so that you feel 100% confident on your big day and are not stressed.

Have a look at their portfolios and websites so you know what type of stylist/makeup artist they are. I’ve had many brides call me at the last minute asking for me to do their hair and/or makeup because they’ve had a trial with a different stylist and are unhappy because they hadn’t taken the time to understand their wants or needs. They are trying to find a new stylist to help them feel special and beautiful on their big day.

It is a good idea to have your trial at least a month or two before your wedding day. I recommend a trial so that you are 100% confident that you are going to get what you want. Your hair might change any more than a month or two, and you won't get the same look on your wedding day. Any closer and you’re cutting it too close, and if you’re unhappy with the stylist, it makes it difficult to find another one at short notice. A few brides have had their trial done on the day of their Hen's night to test the longevity of their hair and makeup.

Make sure that you have an idea of what you want to look like on your big day; any pictures or magazine clippings of a style/makeup you have in mind are a great help for the stylist/make-up artist.

Hairdressers and make-up artists are typically visual creative people, and explaining what you want may not come across the same way in their minds. This will help create the image you have of yourself on your special day. A good stylist will give you their honest opinion and will let you know if it won’t work and give you an alternate – but more flattering – look.

The style of your hair and make-up should also suit the theme of your wedding, your dress, your face shape, your complexion and your hair. Bear in mind that everything comes together at the end.

I have done a lot of trials, and brides often think that their hair and make-up are overdone because they are also wearing their trackies and jumper. Remember, once you have your dress on, everything will tie in. Also, understand that your makeup will need to be heavier on the day of your wedding for longevity – and for the photos so you won't look washed out.
