In this article, theage.com.au delves into the rising costs of hiring tradespeople in New South Wales (NSW), particularly focusing on the escalating rates of plumbers.

ServiceSeeking.com.au provided the data from the Tradie Price Index.

Key Points:

  • According to the quarterly Tradie Price Index by ServiceSeeking.com.au, plumbers are the most expensive tradespeople to hire in NSW, with an average hourly rate of $78.84.
  • The index, analysing 52,000 quotes, indicates a 9% increase in trade hiring costs in NSW compared to the previous quarter, with an average hourly rate of $64.46 across various trades.
  • The trades surveyed include building and construction, carpentry, electricity, landscaping, painting, plastering, plumbing, and tiling.
  • Victoria boasts the most affordable tradie rates at an average of $57.90 per hour, while rates are higher in Queensland ($69.93) and Western Australia ($73.08).
  • Aside from plumbers, electricians, landscapers, and painters, there are also high hourly rates in NSW.
  • Housing affordability concerns in NSW have led to a trend of renovation over upsizing, driving demand for tradespeople.
  • Shortages of skilled workers, particularly in trades like bricklaying and tiling, have increased upward pressure on trade prices, with NSW experiencing a six to seven per cent annual increase in trade prices.
  • The building boom in NSW, with over 50,000 homes built annually, coupled with a migration of skilled tradespeople, has fueled the rise in trade prices, which are expected to continue increasing throughout the year.
