Look for Exceptional Feedback
Most businesses who quote on ServiceSeeking.com.au have feedback from past customers – you can find each business’s rating on their Business Profile. Look for businesses with a high rating (4.5 stars or over 90%) and lots of reviews. Avoid businesses with low ratings or no feedback.
Don’t Choose the Cheapest
Price is normally a reliable indicator of quality. Generally speaking, lower prices mean lower quality.
Pick a Local
Choose someone near you to save money and hassle – you can see which suburb they come from on their Business Profile. Most businesses price travel time into their quote, so a local can often get you a better price. We find locals are generally more punctual and responsive to your needs, too.
Compare Several Businesses
If you compare several businesses, you’ll usually get a better deal. Shortlist the best businesses who quote online and invite them to do a face-to-face appointment, site visit, or a phone call. When comparing quotes, be sure to consider the quality of the finish or materials used.
Check Licences & Qualifications
Ask businesses to give their licence number or evidence of their qualifications (especially for building works and always for Electrical, Plumbing, and Asbestos Removal jobs). Most builders and tradesmen must show their license on all advertising materials (business cards, quote books and vehicle signage), and you can check most licences online depending on which state you’re in.
Get a Written Quote
Before the job starts, ask the business to sign a written quote showing the price, including GST and a clear job description. This will give you grounds to dispute the quality of the job if the work is not completed as you’d like. We can’t help you in any dispute you have with a business if you don’t have a signed written quote.
Avoid Paying Cash to Get a Discount
If a business offers a discount for a cash payment but doesn’t give you a receipt or invoice, we can’t help you in any disputes you have with a business. You can pay any ServiceSeeking.com.au business securely online through our online credit card facility.
Don’t pay more than a 10% Deposit
If the business asks for more than 10% of the job value upfront as a deposit, consider walking away from the deal. If the business asks you to pay a deposit for materials, ask to pay the supplier directly yourself.
