The kitchen is the most renovated room in the house, with the bathroom running a close second. Unsurprisingly, they’re also the two rooms most prone to financial blowouts, so having an idea of how much your project will cost you from the onset is an invaluable budgeting tool.

Data on ServiceSeeking.com.au shows kitchen renovation costs range considerably with builders charging between $20 and $95 for their labour, with an average quoted hourly rate of $49 per hour. The average kitchen renovation costs $1,789.

In both cases, materials and fixtures are not included (i.e. tiles, taps, appliances etc.) and the cost normally doesn’t factor in the demolition or removal of the existing kitchen. This can usually be arranged for a flat fee of around $500.

The duties of a builder are varied so be sure to identify exactly what you need done. Also be prepared for unexpected costs that are not included in your initial quote to arise, such as the cost of negotiating support beams.

This data was derived from more than 70,000 quotes submitted on the site between 1 October 2007 and 31 March 2010.
